Week 6: Learning From Mistakes

This week, I focused on learning from my mistakes while creating a scrapbook page using three of my childhood photographs from a family trip to Disneyland. At first, I struggled with arranging my photographs and choosing decorations that worked well together. With guidance from my mom, I experimented with different layouts, colours, and techniques to create a page I was happy with.

Finding a Layout:

One of my biggest challenges was figuring out how to arrange my three photographs because I had two landscape photos and one portrait photo. My mom suggested searching Pinterest for scrapbook layouts using the phrase “two landscape and one portrait.” After looking through different ideas, I found a layout I liked and decided to use it as inspiration. Since my photographs were from Disneyland, I wanted to create a Disney-themed scrapbook page to match my memories.

Choosing My Paper and Making the Photos Stand Out:

After choosing my layout, I looked through my mom’s scrapbook paper and found a polka dot design that I thought matched my Disneyland theme. However, when I placed my photographs on the paper, I noticed they blended into the background. My mom suggested adding slightly larger pieces of coloured cardstock behind each photograph to create a border. After trying this, I noticed how much better my photographs stood out. This taught me how small changes can make a big difference.

Experimenting with Layers and Decorations:

As I continued working, I found a strip of decorative tickets that I decided to layer underneath my portrait photograph. I then started adding stickers and embellishments, but I quickly realized that I was adding too many, making the page look cluttered. My mom introduced me to arranging embellishments in groups of three in a triangle formation to create balance. I experimented with different arrangements until I found one I liked.

Adding the Finishing Touches:

Once I was happy with my layout, I decided to add light blue cardstock behind my white scrapbook paper to create more depth. My mom also explained the importance of including a title to help tell the story behind the photographs. I chose a sticker that said “Happy Place” because I thought it perfectly described my childhood memories of Disneyland. I was much happier with my finished page than when I first started.

What? So What? Now What?

What? This week, I created a Disneyland-themed scrapbook page using three childhood photographs. I initially struggled with arranging my pictures and choosing decorations. With help from my mom and inspiration from Pinterest, I experimented with different techniques, including layering cardstock, arranging embellishments in groups of three, and adding decorative elements.

So What? This experience helped me realize that scrapbooking involves a lot of experimenting. I learned that small changes, such as adding cardstock behind photographs or rearranging decorations, can make a big difference. I also appreciated learning new techniques from my mom that I would not have thought of myself. Most importantly, I realized that making mistakes is a natural part of the creative process and can lead to improvements.

Now What? Moving forward, I want to continue applying the techniques I learned, especially layering paper and arranging embellishments in groups of three. I also want to become more confident experimenting with different layouts. Next week, I plan to explore Pinterest and other online resources more independently to discover new scrapbooking ideas and techniques that I can try myself.
