Week 5: Learning From My Mom

This week, I decided to learn more about scrapbooking by talking to my mom, who has experience making scrapbook albums. I wanted to learn about her scrapbooking process, where she gets her inspiration, different techniques she has learned, and what advice she would give to someone who is just starting out. I thought this would be a great opportunity to learn from someone who has experience and get some new ideas for my own scrapbook.

I’ve attached a photo of my mom and I:

Learning From My Mom:

When I asked my mom about how she first got into scrapbooking, she explained that she started because she wanted a creative way to preserve family memories and photographs. She liked being able to look back at special moments and have everything organized in one place. She also explained that scrapbooking is a great way to tell stories through pictures, decorations, and little notes rather than just keeping photographs in a box.

I’ve attached a photo below of a small portion of my moms scrapbook wall (ordered in years):

I also asked her where she gets her inspiration for different scrapbook pages. She explained that she often gets ideas from looking at other scrapbook layouts, craft stores, Pinterest, and the photographs themselves. Sometimes she chooses a colour scheme based on the pictures or the events she is scrapbooking. For example, if she is making a page about our family Mexico trip, she used brighter colours, while a Christmas page would include red, green, and white decorations.

I’ve attached an image below showing the different colour layouts based on the theme of the photos:

Another thing we discussed was the different techniques she has learned over time. She explained that layering paper, using different shapes and borders, and adding small decorations can make a page more interesting. She also mentioned that including dates, captions, and short descriptions is important because it helps tell the story behind the photographs. One thing I found interesting was her suggestion to lay everything out on the page before gluing it down. This allows you to move things around and experiment with different layouts before deciding what looks best.

I’ve attached a photo below of examples of how to use dates, captions, and short descriptions on a scrapbook page:

When I asked my mom what advice she would give a beginner, she suggested starting with simple layouts rather than trying to make every page perfect. She explained that it is easy to get overwhelmed by all the different materials and decorations available, but you really only need a few basic supplies to get started. She also reminded me that the most important part of scrapbooking is preserving memories and enjoying the creative process.

What?

This week, I had the opportunity to learn from my mom about her experience with scrapbooking. I asked her questions about how she got started, where she finds inspiration, different techniques she uses, and what advice she would give a beginner. I also researched different ways to organize and preserve scrapbook pages. I learned that scrapbook albums come in different sizes and styles, and that ring binders are especially useful because they allow pages to be added, removed, or rearranged. I also learned about page protectors, which help prevent damage to completed pages. This connects to what my mom shared about the importance of preserving memories through scrapbooking. It helped me realize that choosing how to store and organize my pages is just as important as creating them.

I’ve attached a photo below showing the clear page protectors and the binder rings:

So What?

Learning from my mom helped me realize that scrapbooking is about more than just decorating pages. It is also about preserving memories and telling stories through photographs, colours, and decorations. One thing that stood out to me was her advice about not worrying too much about making everything perfect. I sometimes spend a lot of time trying to decide how I want my pages to look, so this was a helpful reminder to enjoy the creative process. I also realized how valuable it can be to learn from someone else’s experiences and techniques.

Now What?

Moving forward, I want to apply some of the advice my mom shared with me, such as experimenting with different layouts, colours, and decorations. This week, I also worked on a scrapbook page that did not turn out how I had imagined. I struggled with the placement of papers and decorations and was not completely happy with the final result. Next week, I want to reflect on what went wrong and what I could do differently to improve my page. I think this will help me learn from my mistakes and become more confident in my scrapbooking skills.
