Week 7: Learning Through Pinterest

This week, I focused on exploring how technology, specifically Pinterest, can help me learn new scrapbooking techniques and find inspiration for future pages. Last week, when I was struggling to figure out how to arrange my three Disneyland photos, my mom suggested searching Pinterest for layout ideas. I found this really helpful because I could see how other people arranged their photos, layered different papers, and added decorations to their pages.

As I explored Pinterest, I noticed how many different scrapbooking styles, layouts, colour combinations, and techniques were available. I liked how I could search for specific ideas depending on how many photos I wanted to include or the theme I was going for. Being able to see examples of finished scrapbook pages helped me visualize how different elements could come together.

My Pinterest Inspiration Board

For my visual activity this week, I created a Pinterest inspiration board focusing on three different scrapbooking techniques: photo placement, layering, and colour combinations. I chose these three areas because they are things I have been experimenting with throughout my inquiry and want to continue improving.

For photo placement, I found examples of different scrapbook layouts that showed me how photos can be arranged depending on their size and orientation. For layering, I chose a scrapbook page that demonstrated how different papers, shapes, and decorations can overlap to make a page more interesting. Lastly, I explored different colour palettes to see how certain colours work together and could help me create a theme for my scrapbook pages.

Creating this inspiration board helped me organize the different ideas I found on Pinterest and think about which techniques I wanted to try in my future scrapbook pages.

Challenge of using Pinterest

While exploring Pinterest, I noticed that some of the scrapbook pages looked quite complicated and used materials that I didn’t necessarily have access to. This made me realize that although Pinterest is a great place to find inspiration, not every idea is realistic or easy to recreate. I had to think about what materials I already had and how I could adapt different designs to fit my own scrapbook. I think this is an important part of the learning process because it encourages me to problem solve and be creative with what I have.

What I Learned & Moving Forward

One thing I learned this week is that technology can be a really helpful tool when learning something new. Although my mom has been my main source of guidance throughout this inquiry, Pinterest has given me another way to explore ideas and learn different techniques on my own. I also found that having visual examples makes it easier for me to plan my pages because I can see how different layouts and decorations work together.

Moving forward, I want to continue using Pinterest when I need inspiration or feel stuck on a scrapbook page. I also want to challenge myself to experiment with different ideas instead of following someone else’s layout exactly. I think this will help me become more confident and creative as I continue learning how to scrapbook.

Future Teaching

As a future teacher, this experience also made me think about how technology can support students in their own learning. Just as Pinterest helped me find inspiration when I was unsure where to start, providing students with visual examples and different resources could help them feel more confident when completing creative activities. However, I also think it’s important to encourage students to use these examples as inspiration rather than feeling like their work needs to look exactly the same. I want to create a classroom where students feel comfortable experimenting, making mistakes, and expressing their own creativity.

What? So What? Now What?

What? This week, I explored Pinterest as a way to learn new scrapbooking techniques and find inspiration. I created an inspiration board focusing on photo placement, layering, and colour combinations. I also noticed that some designs were difficult to recreate because they required materials I didn’t have.

So What? This experience helped me realize that learning doesn’t always have to come from someone directly teaching me. Technology can provide opportunities to explore new ideas and learn independently. I also learned that it’s important to be flexible and adapt ideas rather than trying to make everything look exactly like the examples. As a future teacher, this reminded me how valuable visual resources can be for encouraging creativity and supporting different ways of learning.

Now What? Moving forward, I want to continue using Pinterest to inspire my scrapbook pages while challenging myself to come up with my own designs. I also want to be more intentional about choosing techniques that work with the materials I have available. In my future classroom, I hope to use visual examples and digital resources to inspire students while encouraging them to express their own creativity.
